Va$htie's Look

Ok well if you guys don't know Vashtie Kola then SMH at you. Vashtie, aka "Downtown's Sweetheart", is an artist, music video director, fashion designer (Violette), and party promoter (mostly known for her "1992" parties). While I was on her blog I came across this photo of her and I fell in love with her outfit. I absolutely loved how she balanced out the tight mini skirt with a loose denim shirt. It's all about balance people! lol

"Style and Fashion Isn't Always the Same..."
I was reading some posts on Highsnobette when I came across this one.
"A blogger made an unflattering comment about Olsen’s head wrap at the YSL Belle d’Opium party we attended a few weeks ago while, Lois and I on the other other hand were totally fiending over it . Not just because the accessory in itself was to die for but because style-wise we got it.In her own way this young woman illustrated a deeper understanding of fashion that is not always ’styling appropriate’ in color choice or proportion proving that style and fashion are not always the same . Having worked a a stylist myself I can speak to proportions color choice, highlighting this or that feature. But, style is often is about how you feel what you want to express , the story, the glamour or un-glamour .Not always about having the ‘right ‘ look, whatever that may be.
Therefore, when the fashion establishment sometimes frowns at bloggers( not that they all know what they are talking about) I get it because to some extent , there’s a lack of knowledge of the history of where certain looks or inspirations come from. The head wrap for example was all about the true spririt of Yves Saint -Laurent who himself was Morrocan , featured caftans in his collections in the 60’s, made his fame by artfully contrasting a sexy exoticism with functionality, think Marisa Berenson or Bianca Jagger. However too many out there don’t even know …"

Janelle Monae | Style Influences
One of my favorite fashion icons Janelle Monae discusses her music and style influences during her interview with Nylon magazine.
Gilbere Forte "Black Chukkas"
Stumbled upon this at High Snobiety
"This music video, shot in Los Angeles, depicts a typical day in the life of Gilbere Forte’s black chukkas (in which prominent sneaker store UNDFTD plays partial backdrop). Directed by Chris Robinson and Iren Brown of ROBOT Films. Enjoy!"
